Training in Zen at Daiyuzenji

The actual methods of Zen training address the whole human being: because we are physical creatures, they utilize both body and mind. One's body, senses, breathing, thought-stream, emotions, work and daily activities...all of these are engaged and used in Zen training. Zen is not solely a conceptual spirituality, requiring only belief in particular doctrines or the understanding of a philosophy. Zen is a practice, and practice is what it requires.

The core practice of Zen training is zazen, or meditation. But there are many other practices as well. The Rinzai school in particular is known for adapting a wide range of complementary activities to develop and refine the human being. Fine arts such as calligraphy or flower arrangement, and physical disciplines like martial arts, are traditional examples. If approached correctly, in fact, almost any activity or work can become a practice that develops and deepens our understanding of who we are.

Viewed in this way, one's entire life becomes the dojo: a place of training.
